Get to Know Maggie

Being retired and still busy painting, I’ll admit I’m a nutcase. I used to sell in galleries, win awards, the whole 9 yards – but now I paint for fun, and if a painting sells, it’s a good thing. People find me by “word of mouth” – which I think is a weird phrase, but you know what I mean.

As for my personal background, I’m Kenansville NC born and bred and have got a real heavy Southern accent to prove it! Moving with my late husband’s career, I have lived in NC, SC, NY, VA, MO, and WI. I've been a secretary, artist, writer, reporter (very briefly), sign shop owner, and caregiver. I’ve settled in Pensacola near my sister and “boy”-friend (who is really a grown man). I see my children in NC more now that I’m in FL. Go figure.

I’ve got great friends from all the places I’ve lived, and now in Pensacola. I'm active in St. Mark UMC, some exercise groups, a plein aire painters group, and lots of friends and family gatherings. Life is good! God is good!

My motto in life? Just be kind.

Art Career

My career began in the 1970s when a friend asked if I would do a pen and ink of her homeplace. From there, I began taking commissions around Raleigh. These grew into watercolor-enhanced house portraits that sold around the USA. I expanded into fine art while taking watercolor classes under artists such as Bill Mangum of Raleigh NC, Skip Lawrence of Maine, and Vera Dickerson of Roanoke VA, plus various workshops in the Carolinas.  I studied perspective and composition in Greensboro NC, Roanoke VA, and St. Louis MO. I was juried into the Virginia Watercolor Society and the North Carolina Watercolor Society and won several exhibition awards around Martinsville VA and Wilkesboro NC. My paintings and prints sold in galleries in Greensboro, Raleigh, and Winston Salem, NC. I published a series of prints of historic Greensboro and Blowing Rock NC. I worked actively in art leagues in Martinsville VA and Wilkesboro NC.

My focus is impressionism and abstract paintings which include landscapes, skyscapes, sunsets, scenery, beach and water scenes, florals, children, pets, the Blue Angels - anything that catches my eye that's beautiful! I continue doing house portrait commissions in pen and ink and watercolor and have painted several Pensacola homes, including house portraits for the annual Joyce Turner awards for the North Hill Preservation Association.

I have painted several series of paintings and continue adding to the series regularly: “The Blue Angels,” “Sand Dunes,” “Skies,” and “Florals.”

My Other Hobby - Writing

A few years ago, I put my other favorite hobby to use and turned my humorous stories into a book entitled “TAKING LIFE NOT TOO SERIOUSLY, A woman, a quirky mouse named Hugh, and a life a half bubble off center, just like the rest of us!" It's a collection of one- and two-page stories. I tell 'em and my little illustrated mouse named Hugh (a.k.a. "Thorn-in-the-Side)" adds his two-cents worth! It’s available on Amazon.
